Smithsonian Immersion
A short time after finishing my studies, I visited one of my study friends in Washington D.C. My friend was busy studying and interning at a pro-bono and that gave me plenty of time to do some sightseeing. What I did not know at the time is all museums in D.C. are free and open to the public. The access to culture the city provides blew my mind. I spent a lot of my time during that trip taking it all in. I have always enjoyed visiting museums and learning new things. 4 full days of Smithsonian immersion completely changed me. I could not get enough of it and went back for more knowledge every day.
I came across Ultralearning by Scott H Young through an HBR podcast interview. The book provides with examples of remarkable people from various fields that have been able to learn new skills very quickly. I have been able to experience ultra learning first hand through my wife. In one and a half year she turned her career upside down and became a full time web developer.
Accessibility to information has exponentially increased in the past few years as the internet has become a more common commodity. If you are interested in learning new skills, you can find resources online easier than ever. Many universities are offering free courses through Coursera, Edx or through their own website such as MIT. Designing your own curricula and validating the quality of the resources is now a privilege of the curious minds.
